All dressed up and no place to go

This weekend was to be the convergence of all peoples dedicated to the re-establishment of the classic cycling era in modern times. Older bicycles and their componentage would be taken out of cold storage and resurrected to be on full display in coastal critical conditions on the white roads of the Santa Lucia mountains. Unseen treasures  after spending decades in boxes tucked away-these precious items would feel the stress and strain that they were meant to experience- the sights, the sounds.....the smells of a truly causal coastal period-correct cycling convergence.

Those were the plans.......enter the Covid-19 virus of 2020. Only a non-period-correct modern upstart virus of global proportions could stall us and the entire event indefinitely. This is an extreme hardship on all and sundry who really counted on this event to bring to life their collective fantasy of sepia-toned ersatz heroics borrowed from the pages of nostalgic weblogs written by the true experts who were not there at the time........ and never were- nor were we.

So, we must wait. For how long ? That is difficult to say- at this time we are all -just like the vintage period-correct bits lovingly stored away for decades-waiting for the time to again see the light of day on the open dusty roads of our chosen and fully fabricated mock destiny. When will we once again don the rosy tunic of team Cycles Heroic and show the peloton a clean pair of heels on the way to a tasty snack at a well-stocked rest controlle ? And when will we answer all the myriad of questions fired at us by the faithful of craigslist and ebay about the rare and impossibly pristine cycles we are astride ?

All these questions will be answered in time, and that time will not come before its time-certainly not without a lot more preparation and consideration by concerned social-distancing sufferers of the casual coastal variety. Stay tuned- this might take a long time and it might turn out to be a very bumpy ride indeed. Great things are waiting on the other side for those that are patient and those that survive. The ones that do not survive will live on in our writings and we will ride on with the things and memories that they have left us. And these things we will take along on our collective journey and give to the next, even more removed generation.

Until we meet again.........
